Grading

100 points will be possible for the course. Points will be earned as follows:

• 52 Points – In-Class Engagement, which includes:

  • Attendance

  • Completing the reading and engaging in the in-class discussion.

  • Written discussion starters due in advance, submitted online and brought to class.

• 34 Points – Essays

  • There will be two essays, a midterm and a final, worth 17 points each.

  • Essays need to be about 2,000 words (around 7-8 pages double-spaced).

• 14 Points – Presentation

  • Each week students will present a topic of the day.

  • Each student is required to deliver 1 presentation.

Grade breakdown

A = 93 - 100 points

A- = 90 - 93 points

B+ = 87 - 89 points

B = 84 - 86 points

B- = 80 - 83 points

C+ = 77 - 79 points

C = 74 - 76 points

C- = 70 - 73 points

D+ = 67 - 69 points

D = 64 - 66 points

D- = 60 - 63 points

F = 0 - 59 points

Weekly Assignments

Each week you will have reading to complete. Sometimes there is one longer essay, other times it will be several shorter ones.

To become prepared for class, you will have to complete a ‘discussion starter’ assignment that requires engaging with the weekly reading.

The discussion starter will be due online Sunday night before 11:59 p.m. AND you will need to bring a copy into class (either on paper or in some digital form you can refer to).
